Why Teach Digital Citizenship?

According to Common Sense (2019) Daily interactions with digital technology increases with age. Tweens and teens spend an average of 6 hours daily on devices. Technology has seamlessly integrated into our global society, shaping daily routines and interactions. From teenagers to children, technology has a pervasive hold on every individual.

In a span of 6 years, the amount of time children spent on mobile devices per day tripled (Common Sense, 2017). The rise in digital technology use is a huge indicator of the need to teach digital citizenship. Students and families must have access to information about responsible and safe internet use to promote a healthy online experience for every individual and the entire digital community.
