Tools and Methods for Teaching Digital Citizenship

Numerous resources concerning digital citizenship are available online for educators and families. Common Sense Education provides exceptional free materials to support students' digital citizenship development. The materials include lesson plans, videos, and instructional models for implementation. Educators and students at every grade level can benefit from the resources. 

Infographics are another useful resource for enhancing students' understanding of digital citizenship. The Citizenship in the Digital Age Infographic is a great one for making connections between real-world citizenship and digital citizenship. 

To teach a lesson on privacy and security regarding passwords, I would access the Common Sense lesson titled "Password Power-Up." The lesson includes an essential question that will spark students' interest and set the stage for learning. Students can interact with the lesson while watching a video and communicating with each other to develop their understanding of the topic. As a user of various websites, I have plenty of experience with passwords. I will model the importance of creating solid passwords by sharing my experiences using passwords with my students. I will share with students how strong passwords are created using an actual website that requires specific criteria. I will explain why these criteria are necessary to keep students' information safe. Modeling real-life scenarios has a better outcome on students' development of digital citizenship.
